Classics in Jazz : Bach to Gershwin

From Bach to Gershwin -- Mendelssohn's Songs Without Words, Debussy, Michel Legrand and more: works that cross eras and genres to widen the musical lens.
Jazz pianist Yoonsung Cho and clarinetist Wooyeon Kim, together with the contemporary ensemble Artist Group 2nd Balcony, reimagine familiar works for today through different instrumentations and musical languages -- the RE:COMPOSITION PROJECT.

Artist Group 2nd Balcony is a professional arts organization that plans and produces new repertoire and performance content rooted in classical, musical theater, pop and jazz. It reinterprets familiar music through original arrangements and ensemble sound, creating stages that actively connect with audiences.
Beginning with a cultural-space project with the Busan Tourism Organization in 2022, the group has steadily widened its ties with the local community, and in 2024 its 'Instrumental K-pop' -- popular songs rearranged as chamber music without vocals -- was selected for the Busan Cultural Foundation's Creative Preparation Grant. Building on this, it has expanded into seasonal concert series, musical galas, barrier-free performances, audience-participation programs and cultural tours, and in 2025 it was designated a Professional Arts Organization by Busan Metropolitan City.
In 2026 it presented The Secret of Happiness, a reinterpretation of musical theater music, and AUTUMN FREQUENCY, a collaboration with a terrarium exhibition, and it continues to broaden its scope with Through the Sandstorm -- selected for the Busan Cultural Foundation's Creative Development (Collaboration) program -- a cross-disciplinary work combining literature, art and music.

Yoonsung Cho Duo

Jazz Piano Yoonsung Cho

Often described as a "world-class jazz artist," pianist Yoonsung Cho grew up surrounded by music under the influence of his father, a first-generation Korean jazz drummer. Spending his childhood in Argentina, he received a rigorous classical education at the Carlos López Buchardo Conservatorio Nacional in Buenos Aires and built a solid musical foundation through long study with Inés Gómez Carrillo, a pupil of Arthur Rubinstein and one of Argentina's foremost classical pianists and composers. He then moved to the United States, graduating on scholarship from Berklee College of Music and the New England Conservatory and studying with jazz masters including Hal Crook, Paul Schmeling and Kenny Werner. The height of his artistry, moving freely between classical and jazz, was confirmed when he became the first Asian full-scholarship fellow of the Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz (at USC), which selects only seven musicians worldwide. He taught for eight years at the Musicians Institute in Hollywood while playing piano with the Ron King Big Band, and has performed on stages and at festivals across the US, Europe and Asia with artists such as New York Voices, Gary Novak, Cathy Segal-Garcia, Laura Fygi, Eric Benét and Renee Olstead.
Today he works across jazz, classical, Latin, K-pop and more as a composer, arranger, producer and music director.
His major projects include Latin Corea, Bach-Renovation, Bohemian and Out to Sea, and he remains active in festivals at home and abroad, broadcasting, film music and orchestration.

Clarinetist Wooyeon Kim is a performer who keeps expanding his own repertoire through constant challenge and wide-ranging musical activity. He has distinguished himself at major competitions at home and abroad, including joint 3rd prize at the Markneukirchen International Competition in Germany, 1st prize at the Beijing International Competition, 2nd prize at the Saverio Mercadante Clarinet Competition, 1st prize at the Classic Wind Saxophone & Clarinet International Competition, and the Possehl Music Prize.
He has shared the stage with world-renowned musicians such as Sabine Meyer, Ning Feng, Martin Fröst, Bruno Canino, Mira Wang and Jan Vogler, and has appeared as a soloist with leading orchestras including the Munich Philharmonic Soloists, the Lübeck Philharmonic Orchestra, the Beijing Symphony Orchestra and the Daejeon Philharmonic Orchestra. He has also been invited to international festivals in Bad Kissingen, Ljubljana, Stavanger and elsewhere.
In Korea he has played as guest principal and member with the Seoul Philharmonic, Seongnam Philharmonic, Gyeonggi Philharmonic, TIMF Ensemble Orchestra, Hwaeum Chamber Orchestra and KCO, and has given solo recitals on many stages, including Kumho Art Hall's Beautiful Thursday series.
A graduate of Yewon School and Seoul Arts High School, he studied at the Cologne University of Music and became the first Korean to study with Sabine Meyer at the Lübeck University of Music. He completed the Konzertexamen at Lübeck and the Meisterklasse at the Dresden University of Music, and served as Teaching Assistant at Dresden and associate principal of the DalaSinfonietta Falun.
He currently teaches at Chung-Ang University and is active as clarinetist of the ensemble All That Clazz and as a D'Addario Artist.
