An Icon of Classical Music in Busan

Choong-Keun Oh has made his mark as a Korean conductor on the world's great stages, from the Berlin Philharmonie, the Vienna Musikverein and Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre to Prague's Smetana Hall. A graduate of Seoul National University and its graduate school and of the Boston Conservatory, he joined the KBS Symphony Orchestra as a first violinist and was recruited as concertmaster of the Busan Philharmonic, becoming Korea's youngest concertmaster at 25. During seven years as concertmaster he did much to raise the Busan Philharmonic to a new level. He has since performed in major concert halls in Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic, the US, Japan and Russia, and has conducted leading orchestras at home and abroad, including the Berlin Symphony, Tokyo Philharmonic, State Hermitage Orchestra, North Czech Philharmonic, Korean National Symphony, Busan Philharmonic and Changwon Philharmonic, raising Korea's profile as a conductor from Busan. Appointed professor at Kosin University in Busan in 1990, he taught for 26 years and has devoted himself to training future professional musicians through programs such as the BNK Happy Music Camp, inspiring music students with creative dreams. Bringing philosophical reflection and musical identity to the podium, he received the 9th KNN Culture Award (2006), the 48th Nanpa Music Award (2016) and Performing Artist of the Year at the 14th Performing Arts Management Awards (2023). With a mission to revive classical music, he served as artistic director of the Busan International Classical Music Festival (BICmf), founding artistic director of the Busan World Philharmonic, CEO and founding artistic director of the KNN Broadcasting Symphony Orchestra, and chair professor at Pukyong National University. He is now artistic director of the Busan Symphony Orchestra.

Dvořák

Serenade for Strings in E major, Op. 22 - Mvt. 5

Barber

Adagio for Strings, Op. 11

Beethoven

String Quartet No. 13 in B-flat major, Op. 130 - Mvt. 5 'Cavatina'

Tchaikovsky

Serenade for Strings in C major, Op. 48 - Mvt. 4

The oldest question we ask ourselves is set upon the resonance of strings.

'Myeonggyeonmanri' Series III, Who Am I?, is a stage where Choong-Keun Oh's music meets the thought of guest speaker Jin-Seok Choi. The finale of Dvořák's Serenade for Strings refreshes the flow with buoyant energy, and the long-drawn breath of Barber's Adagio for Strings illuminates the inner self. The 'Cavatina' from Beethoven's String Quartet No. 13, steeped in the restrained emotion of his late style, reveals the human face in stillness like a confession, and the bright, expansive energy of the fourth movement of Tchaikovsky's Serenade for Strings brings the evening to a close. Not where the question ends, but a stage that becomes the starting point toward one's true self.
