## About

As the seventh stage of the '2026 NAC Signature Classics (Symphony No. 5 & Choral Series)' held every Saturday at 5 PM at Nakdong Art Center Concert Hall, this is an all-Sibelius program rare in domestic concerts. Conductor Ji Jung-bae and the Busan Symphony Orchestra open with 'Valse Triste', followed by Sibelius's Violin Concerto and Symphony No. 5. Symphony No. 5 is a work in which Sibelius captured the scenery of his homeland Finland after seeing swans taking flight from a lakeside.

Ji Jung-bae is a conductor active across Europe and Korea after serving as chief conductor at the Ulm and Trier municipal theaters in Germany, and became the first Asian to win the Conductor Award at the German Operetta Prize in 2012. Featured soloist Choi Song-ha won second place in the violin division at the 2023 Montreal International Musical Competition, was the youngest second prize winner in the senior division of the Yehudi Menuhin International Violin Competition, and was selected as a laureate at the 2024 Queen Elisabeth Competition.

Sibelius No. 5

Sibelius Violin Concerto

Sibelius is a concert favorite, yet an all-Sibelius program is rare even on Korean stages. The Busan Symphony Orchestra under Joong-Bae Jee performs his signature Symphony No. 5 together with his Violin Concerto. Having watched swans take flight from a lakeshore in his hometown of Järvenpää, Sibelius captured the landscapes of his native Finland in the Fifth Symphony. As the work unfolds, a vast, full-bodied sound sweeps through the hall, as if the misty glacial vistas of the North were coming to life, leaving a deep impression from the opening to the finale. The first half opens with "Valse triste," a favorite encore of many orchestras. It is the first of six pieces written for "Kuolema" (Death), a play by his brother-in-law Arvid Järnefelt: a sick woman waltzes with a phantom guest, ever more wildly, until the guest vanishes, the music stops, and Death arrives. The Sibelius Violin Concerto that follows ranks alongside those of Tchaikovsky, Mendelssohn, Brahms, and Beethoven among the greatest violin concertos. Sibelius was originally a violinist, a composer who knew the instrument well. The soloist is Song-Ha Choi, who has been highly active since winning second prize at the Montreal Competition.

As part of the prize he conducted Oper Leipzig's production of Strauss's "Die Fledermaus," and that same year he served as music director and conductor of the Oper Oder-Spree opera festival. In 2015, on the square before Berlin's Brandenburg Gate, the symbol of German reunification, he led the Korea-Germany joint orchestra as Korea's representative conductor at the closing concert of the Eurasia Friendship Express marking the 70th anniversary of Korea's liberation, organized by Korea's Ministry of Foreign Affairs with the support of the German government.
